John
Lowe

John grew up on a gentleman’s farm next door to his grandmother,
Sadie, in Dover, MA. The farm was home to fruit orchards, pigs,
dogs, cats and….chickens. From a very young age he raised
baby chicks…teaching them to ride on the handlebars of his
tricycle and later bicycle. He watched in amazement as his Grandmother
would have chickens perch on her shoulders as she walked around
the gardens.
Around the age of 10 John was given a rooster as a gift. George
was a White Rock Cock and won First Place in the Barnstable County
Fair on Cape Cod. John made his little brother sleep on the ground
at the Fair to keep anyone from stealing George. Not long after
his win, George was attacked by a dog. John’s grandparents,
Sadie and Percy, nursed George back to health building him a wooden
cage that they kept under the piano stool in the dining room.
George was never the same after the attack, only letting John’s
Grandmother care for him. John has been spreading the love of
the rooster ever since…..
John has been painting Roosters for over 30 years. Self-taught
John’s paintings are bright, colorful and whimsical. His
art career began by giving the paintings away as gifts to family
and friends. During his first show as a professional artist John
sold 18 paintings and 3 commissions.
John recently appeared in Season 9 of CBS’s Emmy award winning
travel reality show “The Amazing Race” where he met
cast mate Lisa Hinds. John says thru the encouragement of Lisa
he has been able to gain the confidence to pursue his dream of
being an artist.
John currently lives in his restored 1885 Brownstone in Dorchester,
Ma. where he is an Wealth Advisor. He shares his home with his
three dogs, Percy, Sadie and Hector and spends his weekends on
Cape Cod.
“You have to be a certain kind of person to have the rooster
in your home. You have to be bold….they are very special
fowl and people should appreciate them more”…John
